Let me start by saying that I love a bargain, so much so that I sometimes get sucked into buying a book just because it's 99 cents. And that is why I got this one. Not very admirable of me, but there it is. To my surprise and delight, I was soon captured by this sweeping historical romance. The story is set in South Carolina back in the days of slaves and plantations and dowries and women in full skirts and tight bodices. The story itself is simple enough, after the death of their parents, a girl (the heroine) and her brother are given a choice. They can either inherit a sum of money immediately, or chose to restore an old and very dilapidated family plantation within a three year term. If they fail to complete the job within the timeframe, they will not only lose the plantation to their guardian, (the hero) but also the sum of money will be forfeited. This book was so good that I found myself wondering why I hadn't read a historical romance in so long. I loved the intrigue of the story, the descriptions of the clothes and the jewelry and the huge estate being rebuilt. All in all, I give this one 4 stars.

Reluctant Guardian edition by Kristy K James Romance eBooks Reviews
I started out really liking the book--a rivalry between families should always be a good read. However, the rivalry for the plantation seemed to be over before it really began. Also, I knew what Michael would end up doing as soon as I read about his letter. It was just too predictable. Then, unless I missed something, I never found out just what the big feud was all about, or just why Devon's grandfather wrote his will the way he did--other than reading about how everyone in town hated him because he was so nasty.
However, I did enjoy reading about the romance between Devon and Tristan, and how much he truly loved her, even though he swore she would be his enemy.
I had a huge issue with the editing. There weren't any apostrophes where there should have been, and there were always commas after the "and" instead of before it. There were also places that words were missing, and once in a while a period was missing, too. I would have given this four stars, but took away one due to the editing.
Devon O’Leary saw her parents burn to death in their home. Afterwards, the fiancé she thought she loved broke up with her, because she no longer had the dowry he expected. Her brother sacrifices to keep them from starving, until they learn their grandfather left them a plantation in Charleston. When they arrive, they find the old man put ridiculous requirements that Adam has three years to satisfy. Otherwise, the land will go to Tristan Montgomery, the man their grandfather has made their guardian.
Tristan had hated Lucas O’Leary for years. Everyone knew him to be a cruel, hard man. Since Tristan’s plantation joins Lucas’s, however, Tristan has always coveted it. He’s eager to appear as Adam and Devon’s friend, but he can hardly wait until he can take possession of the O’Leary land. He knows any relatives of Lucas will be despicable. However, after a few visits, he’s surprised how much he likes Devon and Adam. That’s when things begin to get complicated.
This plot held great promise, but the delivery fell short. Although set pre-Civil War, I got no sense of the time period. Devon rode around with Tristan without a chaperone, her female friend stayed at the house with Adam and no chaperone, the slaves talked in deep dialect but seemed more like mentally deficient little children, Mary Alice traveled from Boston to Charleston without a chaperone, and the list goes on and on. When Devon found out Tristan had had a long term affair with her new friend she decided that, oh, well, it was in the past so she’d just forget about it and still be friends with Constance and marry Tristan. What woman does that so easily, especially in the 1800's? Other parts of the book also seemed unrealistic. In addition, the two main characters left much to be desired. Tristan was hot-headed, used excessive violence, and had no qualms about trying to deceive. Devon was weak and needy and acted very immature. The story is told in an unrealistic, simplistic way at times, the characters have very little depth, and the romantic scenes seemed juvenile, saccharine, sometimes cheesy, and repetitive. However, if you think of it more as a fairy tale, it will be less disappointing. Despite these problems, the novel still held my attention. It was also clean with no profanity or sex scenes. Tristan’s intimate moments with Constance was stated but had happened in the past. I think, with the help of a good editor, this could be a winner. As it is, however, I would call it just okay.
Boston siblings Adam and Devon O'Leary find themselves fighting to restore their family's antebellum plantation or risk losing their inheritance to Tristan Montgomery, who lives on the neighboring plantation. Tristan is forced to be their guardian until the terms of the will have been met or forfeit gaining the land he's coveted so long. The situation attempts to make them enemies, but Tristan can't help but like the young O'Learys. Adam is smart, humble, and kind, and he is fiercely protective of his sister. Devon is lovely and delicate, sweet-natured and gentle. Although he's determined to win the property, Tristan can't deny his growing attraction to Devon. But can she ever trust him enough to fall in love with him?
I loved Tristan from his first appearance in the book, and he only improved as the story developed. He's very protective of Devon, and a little jealous, but not to the point of being possessive. He's very honorable to her, behaving like a doting husband from the beginning of their courtship. I wasn't as thrilled with Devon as a character, because she was so shy and quiet. However, the way Tristan and Devon interact with each other is sweet and heartwarming. Toward the end, another romance begins to blossom for Adam. A villain arrives near the end, increasing the pace of the book as it reaches a satisfying resolution.
**SPOILER ALERT I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 for two reasons. First, the "villain" appears suddenly and serves no real purpose other than to provide a damsel in distress and allow a character to become a hero. Secondly, Tristan's former lover is a major character in the book, as they are still friends and she becomes friends with Devon. I find it hard to imagine being such close friends with someone who knew my husband so intimately, and I can't imagine it would be any easier for Devon.
Let me start by saying that I love a bargain, so much so that I sometimes get sucked into buying a book just because it's 99 cents. And that is why I got this one.
