Elizabeth von Arnim (31 August 1866 – 9 February 1941), born Mary Annette Beauchamp, was an Australian-born British novelist. By marriage she became Gräfin (Countess) von Arnim-Schlagenthin, and by a second marriage, Countess Russell. Although known in her early life as Mary, after the publication of her first book, she was known to her readers, eventually to her friends, and finally even to her family as Elizabeth and she is now invariably referred to as Elizabeth von Arnim. She also wrote under the pen name Alice Cholmondeley.

I found this book boring and seemingly going nowhere from the beginning. It's main redeeming quality is that it's short, but it also has some subtle humor. I kept reading because I was sure something mysterious was going on and would be revealed. Not. I also appreciated that it was clean, but kept getting nervous when kissing between girls continued to get dwelled on... It was all in the innocence of a past era. I wouldn't dare recommend it to anyone and dread going to bookclub and announcing my disdain.Product details

In the Mountains Elizabeth Von Arnim 9781523653331 Books Reviews
I am a fan of Von Arnim, but her storylines can be hit and miss. Her writing - is great. This story was repetitive and slow. I recommend The Enchanted April or Elizabeth and Her German Garden instead.
Love Blue MTBs we as family had so much fun drinking spring water sleeping open air wide open bathrooms. But we love loved it oh MTBs.
There is a real problem with this book. The print is soo tiny you cannot read it without a magnifying glass. I was very anxious to read it as I have read all her other books and this is a memoir of the time of WW II and after. I hope to read it soon, when I have lots of time. Everyone should be warned about the very small print, and I would like to know if there is an edition with average size print.
With a gentle hand, Elizabeth has created for us a cast of characters who are interesting, funny, loving and many faceted. The book starts out rather slowly and never ramps up to a blazing pace, but is delightful and made me laugh out loud many times. .
Set after WWI, this book is slow but I like the author and I read about a time and a geography long gone. If you like something that moves along quickly, this book is not for you but if you're in the mood for listening to what's inside this author's head, and enjoy hearing about the Swiss countryside in the early 1900's, you'll appreciate it.
I can never say enough (all good!) about Ms. Von Arnim's works. She makes me want to five face-first into stands of her beautiful flowers. I wish I could have visited for tea with someone of such sensibilities.
In the Mountains is a fabulous book. It is especially good if you are in the middle of grieving something, and need a good book to curl up with. The book helps you sit with yourself, and ever so slowly come back to life. It's well written, the plot moves along, it isn't morose or depressing (at least not for me.) It's about an English woman who has survived WWI, returns to a country vacation home in Switzlerand. At first she just lays in the front yard in the grass for a long time, then the plot moves along. It isn't gorey, bloody, wrenching. It's soothing, calming, sweet.
